R&D in the clean and sustainable energy industry depends heavily on simulations and computational analysis to discover and develop new energy sources.

Competitiveness in the industry and continuous innovation to solve environmental challenges requires access to rapid and accurate simulations. By creating high-resolution atmospheric models with the help of HPC, researchers can improve the efficiency and optimize power production of wind turbines and wind farms.

For example, modelling atmospheric turbulence more accurately enables determination of the most favourable position to locate wind-turbine farms. While currently too inefficient and expensive to be considered an alterntive to fossil fuels, CCM is enabling research into alternative materials for solar energy clletionthat could revolutionize the industry and position solar energy as a concrete alternative to fossil fuels. Simulations are helping researcher evaluate the environmental implications of new technologies, such as those for enhanced energy production or carbon capture and sequestration. Through the use of simulations, engineers and architects can get better insight into how buildings consume and lose energy, and thus modify designs to improve energy efficiency.
